Using students to sum up key points of a lesson, and produce a revision resource in the process!
At South Hunsley we have been developing the use of a Virtual Learning Environment, (VLE), in the Maths Department, (we use moodle). We have uploaded useful files, Schemes of learning, homework sheets, Smart Board and PowerPoint presentations used in lessons, etc. Added links to useful websites, Exam board sites for past papers, revision sites, enrichment sites, etc. Set up online homeworks (self marking and giving instant feedback and advice! Very useful!). And set up forums for students to discuss their maths, (probably the least successful so far, though I'm working on it!).
Most of this has been developed my myself and the rest of the department. I wanted the students to contribute to this platform to give them a sense of ownership and encourage it's use. I had the idea of getting two students at the end of each topic to produce a PowerPoint presentation covering the key points of that topic. This could then be uploaded to the VLE and act as revision material for end of unit tests. I wanted the students to present this to the rest of the class so that it would be more memorable when they looked back at it. This then gave me the idea of videoing the presentation and including it on the VLE.
This idea is still in it's infancy. I've only tried it with two groups, top set Y10 and a Y13 A-Level group. The hardest thing is them getting over their embarassment at being infront of a video camera, but hopefully they'll get over it with practice and familiarity.
One video clip from each group is included, together with the corresponding PowerPoint. I'll update these as they get better!
